General Information
The Castle of Gargonza, member of the Association Abitare la Storia, is located between Siena and Arezzo: it is a truly perfect 13th-century walled village that dominates the Chiana Valley and its own wooded estate. When the surrounding land became impractical for farming, this monumental village was converted into 25 beautifully-restored Houses., Some of these are let individually; others accomodations are divided into flats, each with its own living room and fireplace, kitchen and telephone. These are completely furnished, and are supplied with linens and kitchen utensils.
Restaurant Castello di Gargonza
The restaurant La Torre di Gargonza (tel. 0575\847065), surrounded by beautiful countryside, is located just outside the Castle walls, and opposite the swimming-pool area. Inside, there is room for 100 people; outside, on the veranda, 150 people can comfortably enjoy their meal. The Restaurant is fully equipped to host banquets, weddings, and business lunches. It offers a typical Tuscan cuisine; among the many specialities we can recommend:
Pappardelle pasta in hare sauce, Pici pasta in asparagus tip, Pennette pasta in Pientino cheese and black pepper seasoning, Tagliatelle pasta in wild-boar meat sauce, Chianina beef-steak in rosemary sauce, Florentine beef-steak, Pork medallions in black olive sauce, Wild-boar meat stew with toasted polenta.
Bookings are by the week, and start on Saturdays. Public reception rooms, gardens and open areas with magnificent views are available to guests. Gargonza is also especially recommended for groups of people interested in spending a holiday in pursuit of their own artistic activities, such as water-color landscape painting in a unique setting, singing or playing musical instruments.
The restaurant La Torre di Gargonza is just outside the walls. Besides offering peace and quiet, a holiday here in Gargonza is the perfect starting point for a tour of little-known areas of Tuscany. The Castle itself is located on a magnificent estate where excellent wine and oil are produced.
In addition to weekly self-catering accomodations, we can also propose bed & breakfast in double/twin bedded-roms with bath/shower, either in our Guest-house or in the Case (apartments) with living-room and fireplace, with maid service and breakfast at the Frantoio. A 18x7,5 mt swimming pool is available for our guests, just beside the ancient walls, in a wonderful panoramic position and surrounded by cypresses and olive trees.
Reaching Gargonza by car is very easy: it is 11 km away from the Monte San Savino A1 motorway exit. The Rome airport is 180 km away, the Pisa airport is 150 km away, and the Florence airport is 95 km away. The nearest railway station is in Arezzo (28 km), on the Rome-Milan line.
